Swiss Re seals $1.3 billion deal with Berkshire Hathaway

Reinsurance group to sell block of U.S. life insurance business to Berkshire Hathaway




LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Reinsurance giant Swiss Re said Monday it's agreed a 1.3 billion Swiss Franc ($1.26 billion) deal to sell a block of life insurance business to Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, deepening the ties between the two firms.

Swiss Re (CH:RUKN 49.34, -1.26, -2.49%) said it will receive the payment as a ceding commission in return for reinsuring a closed block of U.S. term-life-insurance business
The Swiss group said it remains committed to its U.S. life insurance business, but believes the proceeds, along with around 300 million francs of capital that will be freed up, can be used to achieve a higher return elsewhere.

Buffett Chinese BYD Electric Car on The Market This Year ?

Chinese automaker BYD has big plans for the United States and promises to start selling this e6 electric vehicle here this year. (Jan. 12) AP



For the second year, The Chinese company BYD promised at the annual auto show in Detroit that it will bring a plug-in, all-electric sedan to the U.S. market within 12 months.
BYD, which stands for Build Your Dreams, announced Tuesday that it plans to have its e6 sedan on sale in the U.S. in 2010.
Skeptics still have doubts and point out, for example, that BYD still doesn't have a distribution chain in place, which takes time to set up.
But BYD has a credibility asset other Chinese companies hoping to crack the U.S. market don't have: Warren Buffett as one of its lead investors. MidAmerican Energy Holdings, the utility arm of Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, holds nearly 10 percent of BYD

Buffett supports healthcare reform bill even though it is not perfect

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett said Thursday he'd have voted for the Senate's health care reform bill,in a phone call from Omaha Warren Buffett told the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal Star that he supports the U.S. Senate's healthcare reform bill, even though it is not "perfect."
"It is time for us to try to make an improvement."
"The perfect is always the enemy of the good, and the unknown scares people." he said,

But tackling healthcare reform is "the right thing for the country," he added.

The current system "is not working well," Buffett told the newspaper. "Healthcare costs have galloped up as a percentage of (GDP gross domestic product) and we haven't covered the population the way a rich country should."

In voicing his opposition Tuesday to Kraft issuing more shares in order to raise its offer for the British candy maker, sources familiar with the matter said the Oracle of Omaha may have tipped his hand about wanting to protect another candy company in which he has deep ties: Mars." It was Berkshire’s worst showing since falling 20 percent in 1999, compared with a 20 percent gain in the index. Berkshire beat the index in 15 of the last 22 years.
